About BSMEB

The Bihar State Madrasa Education Board is a statutory educational body dedicated to the regulation, supervision, and development of madrasa education across the State of Bihar.

The foundation of the Board dates back to 1920, when organized efforts were initiated to promote and manage madrasa education in the State. It continued to function under the earlier administrative framework until 1980, and was subsequently established as an autonomous statutory body under the Bihar State Madrasa Education Board Act, 1981.

The Head Office of the Board is located at 5, Vidyapati Marg, Patna – 800001. To further strengthen its administrative outreach, a Regional Office was established on 17 February 2019 at VIP Colony, Madhopara, Purnea, Bihar – 854301.



About Us

The Board is committed to maintaining academic standards, ensuring transparent governance, and providing quality educational opportunities to students through its affiliated institutions.

The certificates awarded by the Board are duly recognized by the Government of Bihar. The academic equivalence of courses is as follows:

  • Tahtania (Class 1 to 5) – Equivalent to Primary / Lower Middle School
  • Wastania (Class 6 to 8) – Equivalent to Middle School
  • Fauquania (Class 9 to 10) – Equivalent to Matriculation
  • Moulvi (Class 11 to 12) – Equivalent to Intermediate (10+2)

The Board is also recognized by the Government of Bihar, Council of Boards of School Education in India, and the Northwest Accreditation Commission.

Students who successfully pass examinations conducted by the Board are eligible to seek admission in higher educational institutions, including Indira Gandhi National Open University.
